Pigmentation Routine

A consistent, patient approach to more even skin tone.

Addressing pigmentation is a long game. The most effective pigmentation routines are not the most complex — they are the most consistent. This routine pairs the best-evidenced brightening ingredients with the non-negotiable foundation: sun protection.

Routine purpose

Why this routine.

This routine targets existing hyperpigmentation and prevents new formation through a combination of melanin-inhibiting actives, antioxidant protection, and daily SPF — the single most important step for any pigmentation concern.

Visibly more even tone

With consistent use, dark spots and post-inflammatory marks progressively fade over 8–12 weeks.

Prevention of new marks

SPF and antioxidants prevent UV-driven pigmentation formation — protecting results already achieved.

Improved overall luminosity

As melanin is regulated, skin tone becomes more consistent and naturally reflects light more evenly.

    Layering guide

    How to layer this routine.

    ✕

Apply Vitamin C before Niacinamide — wait 5 minutes between them

Vitamin C requires a lower pH to be active. Applying Niacinamide too soon can raise pH and reduce Vitamin C efficacy. A 5-minute wait allows Vitamin C to begin working before pH rises.

    ✕

SPF is not optional in a pigmentation routine

UV exposure is the primary driver of melanin production. Without SPF, brightening actives are fighting against continued stimulus — they can improve marks, but UV will keep creating new ones.

    ✕

Use brightening actives both morning and evening for best results

Melanin production is a continuous process. Single daily use of brightening actives provides incomplete coverage of the 24-hour melanin cycle.

    Ingredient synergy

    Why these ingredients work together.

Each pairing in this routine is intentional. Understanding why helps you get the most from every product.

    Lifestyle

    Supporting your routine.

    • ✓

Take monthly progress photos in the same light — daily changes are too subtle to notice without comparison.

    • ✓

Do not pick or squeeze spots — post-inflammatory pigmentation is significantly worsened by physical interference.

    • ✓

If you are outside for extended periods, reapply SPF every 2 hours.

    • ✓

Be patient — pigmentation fades slowly. Give any routine at least 12 weeks before assessing.

    Weekly additions

    Once or twice a week.

    +

    Gentle AHA exfoliant (1–2x)

    Brightening mask (1x)

    Questions

    Frequently asked.

Most surface-level pigmentation shows meaningful improvement after 8–12 weeks of consistent daily use. Deeper or hormonal pigmentation may take longer. Without SPF, results are significantly slower regardless of actives used.

All three address pigmentation through different mechanisms. Used together, they are more effective than any single ingredient. Vitamin C (antioxidant, morning) + Niacinamide (melanosome transfer, AM/PM) + SPF (prevention) is one of the strongest accessible combinations.

Yes. All ingredients in this routine are appropriate for all skin tones including deeper South Asian skin tones. Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin specifically are very well-tolerated by melanin-rich skin, which is more prone to PIH.
